I had forgotten about John's reluctance for doubles until I saw David's reminder on this page. I suppose that's why John and I played singles so much in the early-mid 1970s. I was one of the few around young enough to (somewhat) keep up with him on the court. Every time we hit, it was always the same: He would open a fresh can of Dunlop balls -- and ONLY Dunlops. Watching John play was a sight to behold. What he lacked in technique and form he amply made up for in natural athleticism and gritty determination. He loved to compete!
I cherished those matches then and now. He always seemed a bit larger than life to me, a then-HS student. Imagine me, on the tennis court with the Principal! Fortunately, Mason City had its share of tennis talent back in those days. Some of you may remember Su Oertel, Bob McCartney, John Person, Steve Marsh and, on occasion, snow birder, Howard Sprague. Great times, great memories. I envy John, David and the entire Patzwald family for the memories they now have to treasure. Somewhere Up There, I can hear the whoosh of a fresh can of Dunlops being opened. God bless you, John.
Hi Dennis! I vividly remember watching you guys play! And you are so right about the new can of balls every match... Such good memories. We were all so competitive, with such different styles. And for what it's worth, I am now playing in the Mens 55s (!) tournaments and have a pretty good national ranking. I alway think back to Howard Sprague when I play...
